CATCHER’S SIZING GUIDE

Catcher’s gear by age: measure next

Age labels can help you find a shelf to browse. They cannot confirm that a catcher’s set fits. Take current measurements and check every component against the exact manufacturer’s chart.

01 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Start with the team’s equipment plan

Ask whether the team supplies a set and which certification labels it requires. Have the coach review any shared equipment for fit and condition. For a player trying catcher for the first time, this conversation can prevent a purchase before the role and equipment needs are clear.

02 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Understand overlapping age labels

Rawlings labels some youth chest protectors for ages 12 and under and intermediate models for ages 12–15. Those ranges overlap. Its Velo 2.0 youth chest is 13½ inches, while the Renegade youth chest is 14 inches. The label alone does not resolve which fits.

03 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Measure chest and legs independently

Rawlings’ chart measures the chest from the bottom of the throat or collarbone to just past the navel, and the leg from the center of the knee to the top of the foot. Follow the exact model’s instructions and record both measurements. If the pieces in a bundle do not both fit, compare separate components with the coach.

04 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Check the helmet separately

Use the helmet maker’s head-measurement and adjustment instructions. Try it with the rest of the gear and confirm the required labels on the actual equipment. Ask the coach to review the fit in a catching stance. Do not size up protective equipment just to gain another season.

05 / BEFORE YOU BUY

Before buying a complete set

Check exactly what comes in the box. Budget for a catcher’s mitt and any additional protection your league requires. Review fit, return restrictions, and seller availability before purchase. Recheck fit as the player grows; reaching a birthday does not automatically mean every component needs replacing.
