USA vs. USSSA: check before you buy
Two bats can share a brand name and still carry different certifications. Before comparing colors or prices, find out what your player’s league and tournaments allow.

Start with the schedule
Ask the coach for the current written bat rules for league games and every tournament. Save those rules with your shopping notes. If a player participates in multiple organizations, do not assume one bat will qualify everywhere.

A concrete example: Cal Ripken Baseball
Babe Ruth League’s Cal Ripken rules require USA Baseball marking and a barrel no larger than 2⅝ inches. USSSA and BBCOR bats are not permitted in that division. Solid one-piece wood bats have a separate exception under the league’s rules.

Look for the exact certification
USA Baseball maintains information on USABat certification and approved bats. Its FAQ explains that solid one-piece wood bats do not need the USABat stamp, while composite wood bats do. A USSSA marking alone does not establish USABat approval. Check the exact model and the rules that apply to your player.

Then compare length and weight
After eligibility is settled, have the player try an appropriate length and weight with their coach. Drop weight is the numerical difference between length in inches and weight in ounces: a 28-inch, 17-ounce bat is −11. A lighter listed weight does not guarantee the right fit.

Make one final checkout check
Verify the selected size, certification, seller return policy, and warranty. Keep a photo of the stamp and your receipt. An expensive bat is not a substitute for a bat the player can control.
